Don’t take it for granted! (Jangan ditelan mentah-mentah) Idiom is a phrase, or a group of words, whose meaning is different from, or cannot be predicted from, the meanings of its component parts, or constituent words. Thus, it cannot be translated literally from one language (English) into another language (Bahasa Indonesia)
An English learner may learn grammar and at the same time enrich his/her vocabulary, but without a working a knowledge of idioms, even the best student’s speech and writing will remain awkward. A good learner should learn idioms systematically.
An autonomous learner trying to grasp idiom is good while an average learner accompanied by an alert teacher might grasp idiom faster. Idiom should be studied in term of its practical value. The alert teacher should provide the student with any suitable strategy to facilitate the student.
Come and join us in The Torch Bearer Circle! We’ll learn together through a very classic strategy called sorogan combined with adequate drill and practice of idiom!
- This offering is dedicated to the students of semester 3 and 5 of the English Department of STAIN Jurai Siwo Metro only.
