The guideline of Seminar on English Literature Academic Year of 2014/2015
Course: Seminar on English Literature
Academic Year: 2014/2015

A. Aims

All students will be involved in the weekly seminar program. Seminars are aimed at helping them: (1) practice giving a brief academic presentation; (2) get used to taking and defending a position (side) in argument/discussion; (3) improve their fluency in speaking; (4) expand their vocabulary and general knowledge (mainly those related to English literary works); (5) learn and use appropriate skills for seminar (e.g. expressing opinion, asking for clarification, interrupting, etc.); and (6) develop their arguments on wide range of literary issues.

B. Procedure

The weekly seminar will be presented by small groups. Each group consists of maximum three students. For the seminars, each group must find and compose a scientific report on an Islamic literature* (like Laila and Majnun, Abu Nawas, Ali Baba, etc.).  This must be done at least at the third meeting.
Presenters will photocopy the paper for all students in the class and distribute the photocopies at least at the fifth week of the semester. They also have to send the paper to: emailmutupbistainmetro@yahoo.co.id.
(as attachement in RTF and PDF)

*Islamic literature is literature written with an Islamic perspective, in any language. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_literature; 10 July 2014)

C. Paper

At the seminars, the presenters will give a short presentation (about 10 minutes). The presentation should consist of:
1. the synopsis of the work**  (or the poem);
2. the Islamic values (supported with relevant verses of the holy Qur’an or Hadits);
3. the answer to the question of “How would you use the work in a language classroom”; and
4. bibliography.

As all seminar participants should have read the paper, it is unnecessary to summarize the whole paper as everyone should know this already. The presentation will be followed by a group discussion. After the discussion the lecturer will give feedback.

**The term ‘the work’ refers to short story, poem, or novel.

D. Format
Articles should be maximum three pages following these rules: (1) type-written in English, (2) A4 paper, (3) margin: top and left = 4cm, and right and bottom = 3 cm, (4) one-spaced, and (5) saved as Rich Text Format and PDF.
